Deviating from the traditional stand of its ally, BJP, the Pattali Makkal Katchi, in its manifesto released on Wednesday, said a uniform civil code was unnecessary.

The PMK said that with various religions and different customs, the country did not need a uniform civil code. The civil code of each community should be framed in such a way that it ensured rights and gender equality.

The party also said it would strive for the formation of a new constituent assembly to bring changes to the Constitution.
