April 17, 2013 02:41 am | Updated 02:41 am IST - COIMBATORE:

The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) will begin its admission process for undergraduate courses from May 6. This year, the total number of seats has been increased by 10 per cent to take in more students. The university offers 1,330 seats in six science and seven technology programmes. Admissions will be based on single-window system.

Departing from the norm, from this year applications have to be downloaded from the university website. Forms will not be issued to candidates at the university or any of its constituent colleges.

Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday, Vice-Chancellor of TNAU K. Ramasamy said candidates have to access the applications online on www.tnau.ac.in, fill it, pay the application fee, submit online, and take a printout of the filled-in applications and the post the same to Dean (Agriculture), TNAU, Coimbatore, along with the relevant enclosures.

Another highlight of this year’s admission process is that the undergraduate students would be permitted to study one or a few semesters at any of the State Agricultural Universities. This would be sponsored by the Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR).

According to the Vice-Chancellor, guest faculty would be employed to handle certain subjects in all campuses. This was to ensure that students in all the campuses were taught certain topics uniformly.

This would be implemented with the ICAR funding of Rs. 5 lakh for every three months.

The university was all geared up to offer e-books that could be downloaded by students of the university for free. This was in the final stages and was being executed at a cost of Rs. 1.5 crore.

The eligibility for admission was Plus-Two with four science subjects, viz., physics, chemistry, mathematics and biology. The electives could be one of the following: computer science, microbiology, biochemistry, biotechnology or home science.

Five seats were available for Non-Resident Indians and candidates sponsored by agro-based industries.
