August 29, 2009 08:44 pm | Updated 08:44 pm IST - SATTUR:

Two workers were killed and three others injured in a fire accident at a cracker unit near here on Saturday afternoon.

The police identified the deceased as V. Gurusamy (48) and S. Muniyasamy (35). The two were filling explosives for making ground chakkars at the unit in Mettamalai when the explosion took place at about 3 p.m. District Revenue Officer B. Ganesan, who inspected the accident site, said that safety features in the unit like sheds with proper structure and trees around prevented the fire from spreading to other working sheds.

However, three other workers S. Muniyammal (45), A. Guruvammal (50) and R. Ramesh (35) sustained injuries in the impact of the explosion. They were admitted to a private hospital here. The Sattur Town police are investigating.
