Two vans gutted

Two tourist vans were completely gutted and two others suffered partial damage in an accidental fire at a van stand here in the early hours of Wednesday.

Police said that the vans caught fire at the stand near Jakkammal Temple around 3.45 a.m. Fire and Rescue Services personnel from Sivakasi rushed to the spot to put out the fire.

However, the vans belonging to S. Ramesh (27) of Vetrilaiyoorani and Tirumurugan (49) of Anna Nagar here were fully destroyed in the fire.

The cause of the fire was under investigation, the police said.

Victim succumbs

Meanwhile, S. Muthu Mariappan (43), who was critically injured in a fire that erupted when crackers were being made illegally at his house at Vijayakarisalkulam on Tuesday morning, succumbed to his injuries at Sivakasi Government Hospital past midnight.
