Police arrested two Sri Lankan fishermen who allegedly strayed into Indian waters. They reached the shores of Rameswaram fishing jetty on Sunday night after the engine of their fibreglass boat developed technical snag.

Police said the two were arrested under Section 3/10 and 7/14 of the Maritime Zone Regulation of fishing by Foreign Vessels Act, read with Section 14 of Foreigners Act and Section 3(a) and 6(a) of Indian Passport Act. They were produced before a judicial magistrate court here on Monday and remanded in judicial custody. The fishermen, identified as S. Jelestine Jenomani (32) and P. Jayalal Pushpa Kumar (39), told the police that they left Mannar at 5 p.m. and got drifted into the Indian waters . They managed to repair the engine, but could not return to Mannar as it became dark. On seeing the high-mast lights near the Rameswaram temple and on being guided by Rameswaram fishermen, they reached the fishing jetty here, they told the police.
