Two policemen attacked in group clash

Police have arrested nine persons and are on the lookout for one more in connection with an attack on police personnel during the annual festival of the Sri Rajagopalaswamy temple here on Thursday.

During the Vennaithaazhi ritual on Wednesday, clash erupted between two rival gangs over receiving temple honours in which a group had severely injured two police personnel by stabbing them. Head Constable Nagaraj (45) of Tiruvarur and Head Constable Ramesh (32) of Koothanallur Police Station were being treated at the Mannargudi Government Hospital.

Police registered a case and following investigations, picked up Kalidoss (24), Ramesh (30), Venkatesh (35), Rajaram (23), Rajappa (49), Moorthy (23), Vikky (28), Madhavan (25) and Mari (25). Hunt is on for another person belonging to the gang. Mannargudi police were conducting investigations.
