Two NLC contract workers try to commit suicide

October 17, 2010 03:27 pm | Updated 03:27 pm IST - Cuddalore

Two contract workers of Neyveli Lignite Corporation, part of the 13,000 who are on strike since September 19 over various demands, tried to commit suicide today by consuming poison, police said.

They suspect the two resorted to the extreme step as they did not have any income for the past two months.

Meanwhile, Deputy Superintendent of Police T Mani told reporters here that a case has been registered against V Ukkiravelu, AITUC Jeeva Contract workers president for obstructing some workers at the entrance of the NLC lignite mines as they came for duty.

However district secretaries of CPI and CPI(M), Sekar and V Arumugam alleged that a false case had been registered against Mr. Ukkiravelu.

The contract workers strike entered the 29th day today on their 10 point charter of demands, including permanent employment and higher wages.
