Two goldsmiths held

The on Tuesday arrested Nagaraj (27) and Saravanakumar (25), goldsmiths, on the charge of stealing gold weighing 2.5 kg. They had claimed that unidentified persons had stolen it on May 20. They were working in the smithy of Gunasekaran, a resident of Kempatty Colony.

During investigation it was found that no robbery had occurred. On questioning them, it was found that they stole the gold.

Nagaraj and Saravanakumar said that they stole the gold as Gunasekaran had not treated them well.

Two held

The police arrested K. Ramesh (44) of Kuniamuthur and K. Santhosh (22) of S.N. Palayam near a public convenience facility on Syrian Church Road on Monday and seized 2.70 kg ganja. The police said that they were trying to sell it.

Houses burgled

Unidentified persons gained entry into A. Suresh Venkatachalam’s house on Nanjundapuram Road and decamped with ₹7,500, a camera, and a camcorder. The police said the incident could have happened on May 20 or 21 when the family members were away. The burglars had broken open the rear door to gain entry to the house.

In another incident, unidentified persons gained entry into N. Kannan’s house in Pattanam between May 20 and 22 and decamped with gold weighing about 40 gm, three wrist watches, and silver articles weighing 500 gm.

Woman found dead

P. Sangeetha (22) of Uppilipalayam committed suicide at her residence in CMC Colony on Monday. The police said that the woman consumed poison due to problems in her marital life. Those having suicidal tendencies may contact 24x7 helpline 044-24640050.

Four arrested

The police have arrested B. Vikram (25), K. Kanagarajn (21), K. Arun Kumar (25), and P. Anandakumar (26) - all from Mettupalayam - on the charge of assaulting a cleaner of the liquor outlet in Edayarpalayam on Monday morning. The police said that they went to the bar at 7 a.m. when the C. Raja (29) was cleaning the premises seeking liquor. When Raja asked them to return at noon, the official opening time, they assaulted him.

Man held

The police have arrested R. Karthik (35) of Palani on the charge of stealing a handbag of an Isha Yoga Centre employee on Monday. The police said that R. Thiyagarajan (29) had kept it beside him at the footwear collection centre. The police recovered three stolen mobile phones.

Farmer dies

Muthusamy (70) of Devanapuram, near Mettupalayam, who was sustained injuries in an elephant attack a few days ago, died on Monday night.

Student killed

R. Dhanraj (21), an engineering college student, was killed when the tanker lorry in which they were travelling fell on its side near Periyanaickenpalayam on Monday.

His friends A. Veerapandian (20), A. Muthuraj (21), S. Raju (20), M. Prabhu (20), and K. Anandkumar (20), and the driver and cleaner of the lorry were admitted to hospitals in Coimbatore and Periyanaickenpalayam.

Woman robbed

S. Durga (26), a resident of Podanur, was robbed of her gold chain weighing about 25 gm at her house on Monday. The incident happened at night when she was sleeping next to a window.
