Woman Sub-Inspector Kavitha attached to the Valavanur police station was assaulted by a Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam functionary and his supporter at Koliyanur on Thursday.

The SI, along with a head constable, two women police and a constable from the armed reserve police, were posted at the Koliyanur Block Development Office that served as the centre for filing of nominations for the local body elections to regulate the crowd.

When the SI saw Jayachandran (52), Thennmadevi panchayat union councillor, and his supporter P.Kalaimani (29) of Kedar, entering the wrong gate to gain entry into the BDO office, she blocked them and asked them to use the right entrance.

Intolerant of the interference of the SI, Jayachandran used abusive language against her and getting the clue from him Kalaimani caught hold of the SI and twisted her arm. He also pulled her down, all along threatening her with dire consequences.

The other personnel overpowered the duo and arrested them under various counts, including Sections 294 (b) (uttering obscene words), 353 (preventing government servant from discharging duty), 354 (attack on woman with the intention to outrage her modesty) and 506 (1) (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code, besides booking a case for sexual harassment.
