Two labourers died when a huge boulder fell on them at a stone quarry near Rettaimalai here on Friday.

The incident took place at around 10.30 a.m. when the labourers — A. Senthil, 35, and M. Selvam, 50, were engaged in drilling at a particular spot in the quarry.

Police sources said even as the two were drilling, a portion of a boulder collapsed and fell on them. The two labourers hailed from Punganur village, near Tiruchi.

The bodies were retrieved and sent for post mortem to the Mahatma Gandhi Government Hospital here.

The Edamalaipattipudur police are investigating the case.

Quarry sealed

Following the incident, the private stone quarry was sealed in the presence of a revenue official on Friday.

Collector K.Rajamani, in a press release, said the Edamalaipattipudur police had registered a case against the quarry owner Bosco Arokiaraj and manager Thangavel in the wake of the death of the two labourers.

The quarry had been given on lease for a period of five years to Bosco Arokiaraj up to March 2022, the release added.
