In an apparent revenge attack, an armed gang murdered two brothers at Veeravanallur near here on Tuesday.

Police said that three armed youths, who were following a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation bus proceeding from Nagercoil to Ambasamudram on two motorcycles, got into the bus as it stopped at Veeravanallur around 11.15 a.m., hacked to death two passengers, who were sitting at the rear end of the bus.

After orchestrating the crime, the assailants escaped on their bikes.

The deceased were later identified as R. Mariappan (44) of Sripadmanabhanallur near Tiruppudaimarudhur and his brother R. Balasubramaninan (46). While Balasubramanian was murdered inside the bus itself, Mariappan’s body was lying in a pool of blood at Veeravanallur bus stop.

During investigation, the police came to know that Mariappan and Balasubramanian had been cited as accused in the murder of one Kannappan of the same area over a property dispute on August 29, 2015.

When the brothers were returning home after appearing before a court at Cheranmahadevi in connection with the murder case, the armed gang carried out the attack to exterminate them.

Superintendent of Police V. Vikraman visited the spot and deployed police personnel at Sripandmanallur to avoid any untoward incidents.

Veeravanallur police are investigating.
