TIRUNELVELI

Two boys drowned in a tank near Tirunelveli Town on Sunday afternoon.

Police said S. Sudhakar (10) and his friend E. Petchimuthu (9), both from Pandiapuram near Pettai, were reportedly playing near their houses on Sunday afternoon. As they failed to return home for lunch even after 3 p.m., their parents started searching for them.

After their search for the boys did not yield any positive result, the parents filed separate complaints at Pettai police station around 7 p.m.

On Monday morning, the police received information that bodies of the two boys were floating in an irrigation tank in nearby Malayalamedu. Fire and Rescue Services personnel retrieved the bodies, which were sent to Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital for post-mortem.

Since the irrigation tank is bone-dry, the farmers, who were getting water from it, recently desilted it with their contributions and dug a pit in the waterbody. The pit was filled with water following the recent rains.

The boys might have entered into the pit to bath, the police said. Pettai police have registered a case.
