The Melmaruvathur police have arrested two residents of Kizhamur village near Melmaruvathur on charges of killing community dogs in order to save cattle in the hamlet recently.

According to police, about 8 to 10 dogs that had been roaming around the village have developed symptoms of rabies and had attacked goats reared by the villagers a week ago. Enraged by the attack, some of the villagers mixed some choloroform in the food they left for these dogs. When the dogs fell unconscious, they were carried to a secluded spot and killed.

Subsequently, Chennai-based animal activists who were tipped-off about the incident, visited the hamlet and lodged a complaint with the Melmaruvathur police.

On interrogation, the villagers explained the situation that had forced them to resort to such extreme measures to save their goats, which were about to be sold on the eve of Ramzan.

However, the Melmaruvathur police booked Muthu (45) and Murugadoss (40) of Kizhamur.
