: Busting a major racket, the police on Sunday arrested two persons and registered a case against J. Jalil, Chairman, Rameswaram municipality, for collecting entry fee by issuing fake toll receipts for the tourist vehicles in Rameswaram.
It came to light when a team led by the Assistant Superintendent of Police Sibi Chakkaravarthi and the Deputy Superintendent of Police P. Maduraisamy went to Rameswaram in a tourist vehicle by wearing plain cloths.
As the toll collectors N. Boominathan (30), N. Muniasamy (40) and Bahruddin insisted them to pay a fee of Rs.30, the police officials responded to them.
However, without giving the receipt for it, the toll collectors asked them to move towards Rameswaram town. When the plain cloth men insisted on the receipt, they gave a receipt, which was found to be fake.
Then the policemen, who revealed their identity, asked them to show the toll books. It was revealed that four books of 100 sheets were fake.
They allegedly told the police that it was the Municipal Chairman who asked them to collect fee with the fake books, which were given by him.
“The plan was kept secret until the team reached the spot. It was revealed the racket was going on for quite sometime. Based on confession given by the arrested, a case was registered against the Municipal Chairman,” Mr. Sibi Chakkaravarthi told The Hindu .
A special team had been formed by the Superintendent of Police Anil Kumar Giri to arrest Jalil and his close relative Bahruddin.
