The district police have registered cases against sidelined AIADMK deputy general secretary T.T.V. Dhinakaran and Moovendar Munnetra Kazhagam leader G.M. Sridhar Vandayar, among others, for violating prohibitory orders during Thevar jayanthi at Pasumpon on October 30.
Though the prohibitory order stated that no leader should move in a convoy of more than three vehicles, Mr. Dhinakaran came in a convoy of about 200 cars to pay homage to freedom fighter Muthramalinga Thevar on the occasion of his 55th guru puja, Superintendent of Police Omprakash Meena told reporters here on Tuesday.
After reviewing video footages of CCTV cameras installed at Pasumpon and other places, special police teams identified the violators and registered 150 cases, involving more than 300 vehicles, he said.
Mr. Vandayar was booked for installing a flex board with images of living persons in violation of the Madras High Court order, the SP said.
As many as 105 cases were registered against the violators during Dalit leader Immanuel Sekaran’s death anniversary in Paramakudi on September 11, involving 275 vehicles. The police had already seized 60 vehicles in connection with these cases, the SP added.
The SP said 14 teams had been formed to issue summons to the violators during Thevar jayanthi. After investigation, the respective police would file charge sheets against them, he added.
Illegal sand mining
The SP said a special team had been formed to take action against those involved in illegal sand mining in the district. In the last two months, the seven-member team, headed by an Inspector, had seized 65 lorries involved in illegal sand quarrying, he said.
