NAGERCOIL

A 56-year-old truck driver, John Sekar of Chettisarvilai near Tiruvattar, was trampled to death by an elephant on Saturday night.

Police sources said the deceased, suspected to be in an inebriated mood, went near a pair of elephants tied to a tree in front of the Primary Health Centre at Kannanur under Tiruvattar police station limits.

Suddenly, one of the elephants trampled him. He sustained serious injuries. The incident took place when the deceased had gone to see his daughter admitted to the PHC for delivery.

John Sekar was rushed to a nearby hospital, from where he was referred to Asaripallam Government Medical College Hospital in Nagercoil. But he succumbed to injuries on the way, the sources said.

The elephant had been brought there by one Mani a month back.

Tiruvattar police have registered a case and are investigating.
