The Transport Department has plans to conduct programmes for increasing awareness about its toll-free number 1800-425-5430, launched last year for receiving complaints against autorickshaw drivers.
In the last two months, six autorickshaws were detained based on complaints registered and routed through the toll-free number, M. Ramalingam, Regional Transport Officer of Erode West, said.
The erring autorickshaw drivers were subjected to an inquiry and fined, Mr. Ramalingam said, adding that the awareness programme was meant to create a deterrent effect.
During an operation led by Mr. Ramalingam, Traffic DSP Kodiselvam and a few other officials of Transport and Police departments on Tuesday, 22 autorickshaws were intercepted.
Of them seven were detained for not fixing the meter and not having fitness certificates.
The rest of the cases pertained to licence renewal and failure to comply with the High Court instruction for inscribing the toll-free number for the convenience of customers. During the checks conducted during the morning hours simultaneously along B.P. Agraharam and Brough Road and nearby locations, eight cases were registered against vans for overloading.
