Transparent, impartial probe sought

April 22, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:49 am IST - Bengaluru:

Various women’s rights organisations have come forward to press for a transparent and impartial investigation into the case of alleged rape of the daughter of a former bureaucrat.

The incident took place in November 2014, and the victim filed a complaint last week. Karnataka Mahila Dourjanya Virudhi Okkoota has demanded that the investigating officer must not be from Mysuru division, as the accused is from an influential family in the city. The okkoota also added that the investigation must be conducted with due sensitivity and must ensure that the survivor is spared undue harassment, trauma, and distress.

A statement by the okkoota said the reason for the delay in filing a complaint was “sufficiently” explained by the victim. It said, “Attempts are being made by sections of the media to defame the survivor and her family and discredit the veracity of her complaint besides resorting to all kinds of mudslinging even before the investigation has begun.”

To protest against the insensitivity shown to the victim, the okkoota plans to hold a candlelight vigil here on Wednesday.
