March 10, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:46 am IST - RAMANATHAPURAM:

Workers of Krystal Integrated Services Limited, an outsourcing company at Government Headquarters Hospital, staged a dharna on the hospital premises, protesting against the assault on a transgender worker by some hotel employees here on Monday.

Police said the transgender, Mari (42), who is working in the house keeping department, had gone to buy lunch in a nearby hotel when a wordy duel broke out between her and employees of the hotel, after which at least three hotel employees hit her with a hammer, causing a severe head injury.

Mari, who was given 10 sutures, was admitted to the hospital, P. Ebinesar, manager of the company, said. Though the incident happened in the afternoon and Mari lodged a complaint with the police immediately after the incident, the police failed to register an FIR and arrest the offenders till late in the evening.

Mr. Ebinesar said more than 90 workers staged a dharna, stating that they would not disperse till the police arrested the hotel workers. Mari had been working with the company for more than one year, he said.

The company, outsourced by the hospital for various services, had workers including electricians, plumbers, cleaners and gardeners, he added.

When contacted, Superintendent of Police N.M. Mylvahanan said one person was arrested in connection with the incident and remanded in judicial custody. The police identified the accused as Mohamed.
