Hours after R Nasriya, a 21-year-old transgender threatened to commit suicide, frustrated over the delay in getting an identity (ID) card issued by the Tamil Nadu Third Gender Welfare Board, Collector S Natarajan acted with alacrity and issued her the card in the evening.

The transgender, who had applied for the ID card about 10 days ago, came to the collectorate on Monday and protested against the delay in issuing the card despite producing a medical certificate issued by the Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH), Madurai.

As Nasriya, an aspirant for the Grade II constable post, desperately needed the card to submit it before the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court, the collector asked the District Social Welfare Officer S Gunasekari to arrange for the card on Monday itself.

Acting swiftly, she had ready the card by evening after subjecting Nasriya to medical test and based on the certificate issued by the GRH. Deputy Director (health) and a psychiatrist at the government hospital here examined her and issued the certificate that she belonged to third gender, Ms Gunasekari said.

Nasriya, who refused to take food till she was given the card, heaved a sigh of relief after Mr. Natarajan handed her the card at the collectorate.

She thanked the collector and officials for the timely help.
