Transgender injured in acid attack

A 23-year-old transgender, Abi, sustained burns in an acid attack here on Sunday night.

 Abi, a resident of Allikuttai near Ponammapet has completed Standard X and was involved in creating awareness of AIDS among transgenders.

According to police, Abi was a friend of S. Prabhu (32) of the same area who runs a silver anklet manufacturing unit. Prabhu used to demand money from Abi regularly. On Sunday night, Abi met Prabhu’s parents and informed them about his harassment . Prabhu threw the acid kept in his shop for cleaning silver items on her.

Abi sustained burns on the shoulder and hands and was admitted to a private hospital. She was shifted to Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital on Monday. Police have registered a case and arrested Prabhu. He was produced in the court and lodged at Salem Central Prison.
