Train services hit in Kanniyakumari district

Southern Railways effects changes after recent rain; Thiruvananthapuram-Nagercoil service back

December 02, 2017 11:21 pm | Updated 11:21 pm IST - TIRUNELVELI

While there was no disruption of train service from Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi due to the recent rains triggered by Cyclone Ockhi, the Thiruvananthapuram Division of Southern Railway had to make some changes in train services in the cyclone-ravaged Kanniyakumari district.

After torrential rains, landslips at several places and uprooted trees badly hit rail traffic between Thiruvananthapuram and Kanniyakumari via Nagercoil Junction, the railway personnel worked overtime to restore the service between Thiruvananthapuram and Nagercoil junction in the first phase.

As a result, the Kanniyakumari Express Train commenced its journey from Nagercoil on Saturday. Since the rail track between Nagercoil and Kanniyakumari has suffered extensive damage owing to stagnation of rainwater, work is on to restore the services on this section also on an early note. Hence, rail traffic in this section remains suspended and the Thiruvananthapuram Division of Southern Railways had to effect some changes in the pattern of train services.

The Nagercoil-Kanniyakumari Passenger scheduled to depart from Kanniyakumari at 1.25 p.m. on Saturday was cancelled.

However, the Mumbai CSTM-Kanniyakumari Express was partially cancelled.

Similarly, the Bengaluru-Kanniyakumari Island Express was partially cancelled between Nagercoil and Kanniyakumari on Saturday, and hence, the train was stopped at the Nagercoil junction.

The Kanniyakumari-Chennai Egmore Express scheduled to depart from Kanniyakumari at 5.20 p.m. on Saturday was partially cancelled.
