Lifestyle Modification Centre getting ready for launch in Puducherry

he city will soon have its first Lifestyle Modification Centre bringing Yoga and Naturopathy and a host of traditional therapies under a single roof.

The Lifestyle Modification Centre has been sanctioned under the National Ayush (Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy) Mission and is being set up by the Puducherry Government at Rue De La Compaigne road at a cost of Rs. 40 lakh.

The Centre will be providing treatment for patients suffering from various lifestyle diseases including hypertension, diabetes and lower back pain.

The first phase of the work is nearing completion and the centre would be ready shortly. The yoga and wellness centre functioning at the Government Hospital for Chest Diseases will be shifted to the new building, Director of Health K.V. Raman said.

The government is also planning to start undergraduate and postgraduate courses in yoga in tie up with the Pondicherry University and Mahatma Gandhi Postgraduate Medical Education and Research Institute.

The government has appointed yoga therapists and instructors for the Lifestyle Modification Centre and the Government General Hospital at Karaikal.

“The Lifestyle Modification Centre will have a main hall with wooden flooring and equipped with amenities for over 50 people to practice yoga at a time. Patients suffering from lifestyle related diseases will be prescribed natural remedies and therapeutic measures,” yoga and naturopathy therapist, Dr. S. Mageshwaran told The Hindu .

The centre will also be providing hydrotherapeutic treatment including mud packs, steam bath, under water immersion besides manipulative therapy and massage. Magneto therapy and acupuncture will be introduced subsequently.

Equipment have been ordered and the centre would start functioning shortly, Mr. Mageshwaran said.

Earlier, Tourism Minister P. Rajavelu released the logo of the International Day of Yoga celebrations scheduled on June 21.

Over 3,500 students from various schools in the city along with yoga enthusiasts will take part in a mass yoga demonstration at the Beach road on June 21 from 7.00 to 7.30 a.m. Chief Minister N. Rangasamy would inaugurate the mass yoga demonstration.

Mr. Rajavelu said the government had drawn up various programmes including special lectures on yoga and its importance, mass meditation and yoga therapy at Gandhi Thidal from 5.00 to 9.00 p.m.
