Government urged to concede demands without delay

The members of the various trade unions staged an agitation in front of the head post office in the city on Thursday condemning the anti workers policy pursued by the Centre.

The agitation was also to press the demand of doing away with the new pension scheme, creation of special fund for the provision of social security to the construction, powerloom, handloom and auto workers.

R. Rajendran of Labour Progressive Front spoke highlighting the demands and urged the Centre to concede the same without any delay.

T. Udayakumar, district secretary of CITU, S. Sampath, district treasurer of AITUC, Vadamalai of INTUC, Govindaraj of HMS, Viswanathan of AICCTU and Palanisamy of BMS, spoke pressing the demands.

In Erode, members of several trade unions staged a demonstration on Thursday, flaying ‘anti-labour’ policy of the Central Government.

Led by State Secretary of All India Central Council of Trade Unions A. Govindaraj, and representatives of AITUC, CITU, INTUC, HMS, and LPF, the demonstrators cautioned the Central Government against doing away with worker-friendly amendments that had been incorporated after several years of struggle.

They raised slogans demanding containment of price of essential commodities, and sought a minimum monthly pay of Rs. 15,000 for labourers in all sectors, along with a rise in pension to Rs. 3,000 per month.

The protestors resolved to fight against Foreign Direct Investment in security, communications, railways, banking, insurance, healthcare, retail trade, and media.

They assailed the Centre for attempting disinvestment in profit-making public sector undertakings. e contract system of employment must be abolished completely, the speakers said.
