Towards a transparent process for accreditation

NAAC to trust colleges, universities to provide accurate data for ranking

Physical verification of an institution will be done only if the college/university fulfils at least a part of the criteria for accreditation, Virender S. Chauhan, chairman, National Assessment and Accreditation Council, has said.

At a meeting with the principals of various colleges and heads of departments of the University of Madras on Monday, Mr. Chauhan said the Council would not impose more regulations than necessary and instead would trust the institutions to provide data. The aim of the process was to bring in transparency and trust and rely on the data provided by the institutions.

Several changes were being made in NAAC to make it user-friendly. These include sending a team for physical verification of an institution only if it fulfilled 30% of the required criteria. The council is in the process of introducing a template for colleges too.

“The template for the assessment would be different for colleges and universities and for colleges it would be open from August 10,” Mr. Chauhan said. NAAC had reduced the number of questions significantly making it easy for institutions to finish the questionnaire more quickly.

With 70% of the data being provided by the institutions the Council would rely on a third party outside the NAAC to do the accreditation. The names had already been short-listed, he said.

“Since data is from your side the return of the trust must come from the other side too,” he said.

NAAC has decided to bring in at least three or four independent agencies to conduct the assessment process. According to the official the work is in progress.
