The Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) has asked the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) Chairman to submit the video film prepared by the Board of the public hearing held at Vadaseri village in Thanjavur district for Greenfield molasses/grains based distillery unit by Kings India Chemicals Corporation Limited.

In a communication to the TNPCB Chairman, MoEF scientist P.B. Rastogi has said that the 13th Expert Appraisal Committee (Industry – 2) had considered and discussed the project in August but has desired additional information in the final Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)/Environmental Management Plan (EMP).

The Expert Committee has asked if the public hearing was conducted as per the EIA Notification 2006 and whether all procedures stipulated for smooth conduct of public hearing were followed.

It sought to know who represented the District Collector in his absence and his name and designation along with the video film prepared by TNPCB as reported in the public hearing report.

Noting that public hearing should clearly indicate its proximity to the project site, the communication asked the TNPCB to send information to the Ministry on top priority to facilitate further action.

Meanwhile, the MoEF sent a letter to the Regional Director of the Central Ground Water Board asking for details of ground water depletion in the recent past and impact of the proposed project on ground water depletion.

The Expert Committee (Industry –1) had sought details but information has not been submitted, the letter noted.

Another MoEF communication to Chief Engineer, WRO in PWD, State Ground and Surface Water Resources Data Centre, sought his comments on ground water depletion in the area and the impact of the proposed project.
