Eight lakh employees, affiliated to the Tamil Nadu Government Employees Association (TNGEA), would join the September 7 nation-wide general strike, called by trade unions demanding control of rising prices of essential commodities, according to R. Srinivasan, association general secretary.
Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, Mr. Srinivasan said that the strike would highlight major demands which included making the Public Distribution System more effective, filling vacancies in the government, banning outsourcing of work to private agencies and continuing the old pension scheme.
He also said that regularisation of noon meal workers, anganwadi employees, panchayat assistants, clerks at town panchayats, rural librarians should be done immediately and they should be brought under time-scale pay.
The State government should also consider giving proposed Legislative Council posts to government employees.
The TNGEA also demanded immediate release of the recommendations of the one-man commission appointed by the government to go into the wage parities and anomalies of the employees.
