TNCC launches campaign to woo rural voters

Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president B.S. Gnanadesikan on Sunday launched a campaign to reach out to rural masses in a bid to revive the roots of the party.

Talking to reporters after launching the campaign, Mr. Gnanadesikan said the party used to be strong in villages in the past. But it lost its roots subsequently for various reasons.

“Our aim now is to revive the past glory by explaining to the villagers that welfare schemes by the State governments are being implemented with the financial support extended by the Congress-led government at the Centre,” he said.

Stating that he was of the firm view that success could not be achieved singlehandedly, he said Union Ministers and party leaders would also be roped into this endeavour. They would visit villages in the areas assigned to them and explain to the people about various schemes implemented by the Centre through the State government.

Replying to a question on electoral alliance, Mr. Gnanadesikan reiterated that Congress was not isolated and at the same time several partymen, including him, shared a common opinion of not to remain palanquin bearers anymore.

Earlier, addressing village committee meetings held at Nayakanpettai, Thimmaiyanpettai and Erivai hamlets, where a sizable number of women attended, Mr. Gnanadesikan listed out various measures/steps initiated by the Congress-led UPA government in providing safety to women.

The objective of the campaign was not only to highlight the achievements of the Union government but also to revive the party at grass- roots level and to shed the image of palanquin bearers, he said.

Kancheepuram MP P. Viswanathan and Kancheepuram south district president S.L.N.S. Vijayakumar accompanied the TNCC president during the campaign.
