Tamil Nadu will have surplus power by the end of this year, Chief Minister and AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa has said.

Addressing a public meeting near here on Tuesday, she said: “The State will get 230 MW after NLC expansion by July. The NLC-TNEB joint venture project at Tuticorin will generate another 387 MW. The Vallur third unit will start contributing 350 MW from August. Besides, agreements have been signed for purchase of 3,300 MW for 15 years. The Sholapur-Raichur power line, now under trial, will be available for commercial use shortly and contribute another 1,208 MW to the State. The Kudankulam second unit will supply 462 MW by the end of this year.”

Ms. Jayalalithaa also listed the other projects that would soon supply power to the State and said Tamil Nadu would get 3,195 MW of additional power by year-end. This would take the State’s total power generation capacity to 14,745 MW against the requirement of 14,505 MW.

“When I took charge as Chief Minister in 2011, the State’s requirement was 11,000 MW, against the generation of 8,000 MW. Certain amount of time is required to bridge the 3,000-MW gap. During the last three years, generation has been enhanced by 4,170 MW, and this takes our total capacity to 12,170 MW. During the DMK regime, power consumption was 208 million units a day. It has now gone up to 270 MW a day. In the last three years, 30 lakh new power connections have been given,” she said.

Referring to the development works executed in the past 34 months of her rule, she said: “Road over-bridges have been planned between the Polur and Arani railway stations on the Cuddalore-Chittoor Road, between the Mayilam and Perani railway stations and the Mundiyampakkam and Vikkiravandi stations. A dike has been built across the Cheyyar at a cost of Rs.3.07 crore in the Polur-Chengam taluk and another at Korukkathur in Cheyyar taluk at a cost of Rs.2.2 crore. A Primary Health Centre has been started at Senthanadu in the Arani Assembly segment. Combined drinking water programmes have been executed in the Anakkavur block to benefit 27 habitations and in the Cheyyar block to cover nine habitations. Tender has been called for another combined drinking water programme in the Thiruvathipuram municipality at a cost of Rs.13.43 crore. A water distribution programme is being executed in the Vandavasi municipality at a cost of Rs.11 crore. Forty-seven irrigation tanks in the Arani constituency have been renovated at a cost of Rs.14.2 crore.”

Ministers O.Panneerselvam, Mukkur N. Subramanian and P. Mohan were present.
