The Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday decided to move the Supreme Court for initiating contempt of court proceedings against the Karnataka government on the Cauvery issue.
A petition in this regard would be filed immediately, according to an official release issued after a meeting held by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa with Public Works Minister K.V. Ramalingam, Chief Secretary Debendranath Sarangi and Public Works Secretary M. Saikumar.
The Chief Minister instructed the authorities that the State’s due share should be secured by filing the contempt case against the Karnataka government, which “unilaterally” stopped the release of water in violation of orders of the Supreme Court and in a manner that would harm the country’s federal character.
As a sequel to her “determined action” and “tireless efforts” for getting the State's share of the Cauvery water, the Supreme Court, on September 28, directed Karnataka to release 9,000 cusecs of water daily to Tamil Nadu from September 20 to October 15 , as decided by the Cauvery River Authority.
