Tamil Nadu Government on Friday said it would take up issue of removing sugar from futures trading with the Centre, in order to keep its price under check.
A decision in this regard was taken at a review meeting chaired by Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on the price situation and attended by his Deputy M K Stalin, Finance Minister K Anbazhagan and Food Minister E V Velu and top officials.
“Sugar, which was previously removed from futures trading, has been re-introduced in it by the Centre.
Tamil Nadu Government will write to Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee requesting that sugar be excluded from futures trading,” a government release here said.
It has also been decided to add 25 farmers’ market (where vegetables procured directly from farmers are sold) to the existing 152 across the State, the release said.
Steps would be taken to open vegetable sale counters in corporation limits where vegetables procured directly from production centres will be sold to consumers.
PDS shops will hold adequate stocks of pulses and other provision items to be distributed to card holders.
The release said that prices of vegetables excluding potato were on the upper side, and this was due to the recent floods but added prices of vegetables were expected to come down in a week or two following increase in supply.
