A large number of farmers in Nagapattinam on Monday held a demonstration demanding Rs. 25,000 per acre as compensation for withered crops. Similar demonstrations were also held in Virudhunagar and Tiruchirappalli.
Meanwhile land owners said compensation for the dried crops should be divided between the tenants and the land owner.
The land owners would launch an agitation if the government gave the compensation to farmers alone, according to Muthu Pillai, a landlord in Chidambaram.
Meanwhile, CPI leader R. Nallakannu told reporters at Tuticorin that the government should give adequate compensation for the loss of crops in the state.
