Edappadi promises protection for TN students in other states

The TN CM was replying to a special calling attention motion moved by the Opposition members.

Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Wednesday told the Assembly that the State government will ensure the protection of Tamil Nadu students pursuing higher education in other states.

Replying to a special calling attention motion moved by the DMK and Congress members on the death of Salem-based JNU student J. Muthukrishnan who had committed suicide in his friends house in Delhi and the alleged murder of AIIMS student Saravanan, the Chief Minister said a case had been filed in Vasant Vihar police station in Delhi in connection with the of Muthukrishnan.

"The cases are registered under CrPc 306 and 3 (1) (X) of the Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act," he explained.

Besides extending help to bring the body of Muthukrishnan to his village, the government also paid Rs. 3 lakh to his family.

Earlier speaking on the issue, Opposition leader M.K. Stalin demanded a CBI inquiry and constitution of a committee comprising officials of the police and eduction department to ensure the protection of students studying in other states.

DMK member R. Rajendran made a strong case for creation of a data base of students pursuing higher education in other states.
