The Tamil Nadu government has deputed top officials to tour districts of the State affected by rains which has claimed over 120 lives besides causing extensive damage to property since the onset of the North East monsoon in October.
The State government has convened an emergency meeting of the Cabinet to be presided over by Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on December 7 to review the situation.
Principal Secretaries V K Subburaj (Health) and P W C Davidar (Electricity), among others, will visit nine rain-hit districts including Cuddalore and the delta district of Thanjavur, on December 5 and 6. They will assess the damage caused to standing crops, roads and other infrastructure facilities, a government release said today.
They will also oversee distribution of relief material.
The officials have been asked to submit reports pertaining to crop loss, estimates towards repairing damaged water bodies, among others, and submit them to the government which will be discussed at the Cabinet meeting.
The government, which has announced a relief of Rs two lakh to the kin of over 120 persons killed in various rain-related incidents, had already allotted Rs 100 crore towards flood relief.
The North-East monsoon, which set in October last, has been bringing copious rain to the State, resulting in reservoirs and other water bodies receiving good inflow.
The Stanley Reservoir across river Cauvery at Mettur has already reached its full level of 120 ft.
Cuddalore has been hit hard as most parts of the district is under water due to heavy rains and several areas have remained cut off.
Schools and many educational institutions, especially in South Tamil Nadu, have remained closed due to rains.
