The 16-year-old boy, who was arrested for stabbing his school headmaster in Tirupattur on Monday, told the police that he had been carrying a knife in his bag for the past one week, and had been planning to use it.

R. Babu, 52, the headmaster, had reportedly reprimanded him a number of times for having an “inappropriate haircut”, and had told him to come to school with a ‘tidy’ appearance.

“As the boy did not listen to him, the headmaster asked him to bring his parents. The parents came to the school on Wednesday, and Mr. Babu told them that the boy was disobeying him. The student shot back, saying he will come to school in any way he pleases. His mother intervened and asked him to apologise to the headmaster. As he refused to oblige, she hit him,” said Jolarpet inspector S. Thirunavukarasu. The headmaster was then reported to have sent them home. The boy told the police that the incident made him feel humiliated, and he had harboured a grudge against the headmaster ever since.

Headmaster in ICU

The boy fled the school campus after stabbing the headmaster. “On coming to know that his father had been taken to the police station, he decided to come there himself. He was approaching the station when we spotted him,” a police officer said.

The boy was booked for attempted murder.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Sri Narayani Hospital and Research Centre, where Mr. Babu was admitted on Monday, said he underwent a surgery that night. “He is in the ICU and has been put on ventilator support. He is under observation for 48 hours,” the spokesperson said.
