The renovated house of saint composer Sri Thyagaraja on Thirumanjana Veedhi at Thiruvaiyaru near here will be declared open on June 21, according to G. Rangaswamy Moopanar, president of Sri Thyagabrahma Mahotsava Sabha.
The sabha has taken up its renovation at a cost of nearly Rs. 22 lakh. Born at Tiruvarur, on May 4, 1767, Thyagaraja moved to Thiruvaiyaru and stayed in the house till he attained samadhi on a Pushya Bagula Panchami day on January 4, 1847. He rendered hundreds of ‘kritis' in praise of Lord Rama in Telugu and the house used to be his temple for Lord Rama. It is said that he had darshan of the Lord along with Lakshmana, Sita and Hanuman in the house. Devotees of Thyagaraja, musicians and music lovers who visit Thiruvaiyaru for the annual aradhana of the saint composer, make it a point to visit the house.
As the house was dilapidated, the Sabha took up its renovation. The renovated house has an arch at the entrance with the statue of Thyagaraja on top. Two pillars and yazhi decorate the entrance. Inside the house there is a dhyana mandapam, a room for keeping the articles used by the saint composer as exhibition, a kitchen and bath facilities.
“Ganapathy Homam will be performed on June 21 and the house will be declared open for the public,” said Mr. Moopanar.
The sabha has taken up construction of an auditorium near the samadhi of the saint composer on the banks of Cauvery.
It has also been completed and will be inaugurated on June 21.
