After a warm day, several parts of the city received sharp showers on Wednesday. The city will continue to experience thundershowers for two more days.
On Wednesday, the day temperature shot up to 36.1 degrees Celsius in Nungambakkam and 35.9 degrees Celsius in Meenambakkam. This is one degree Celsius more than the average temperature for August. However, the weather observatories did not record significant rainfall till 8.30 p.m.
The heat generated during the day helped in triggering the development of thunderstorms towards the evening. Several areas, particularly in south Chennai, such as Meenambakkam and Adyar, received a sharp spell of rainfall.
Officials of the Meteorological Department said residents would have felt more heat as the rainfall activity across the State had reduced in the past two days. Many places, including interior Tamil Nadu, are expected to get rainfall due to convective activity till Friday.
A trough extending from north coastal Andhra Pradesh to Comorin area may also influence the rainfall, they said. Chennai too may experience thundershowers in some areas during evening till Friday and the maximum temperature is expected to be slightly above normal up to 36 degrees Celsius.
