Three women of Periyar Nagar in Nerur Vadapagam attempted to commit suicide at the collectorate complex here on Monday.

Soliyammal (32), her mother Lakshmi (55), and grandmother Balayee (72) came to the collectorate along with two male members of their family to present a petition at the Public Grievances Day. When they were standing outside the hall, Soliyammal suddenly poured kerosene on herself, her mother and grandmother. The police posted for security at the collectorate prevented them from setting themselves on fire.

Later, they met the Collector S.Jayandhi and lodged a complaint against a local body administrator stating that he had destroyed their thatched house by setting it on fire a few days ago on the allegation that it was built on a poromboke land. He had been threatening them to vacate the land. Collector promised to initiate action on their complaint.
