Three persons were killed and 10 others sustained serious injuries when a lorry lost control and overturned near a temple located deep inside the forests in the Nilgiris district on Tuesday.
Sources said a large number of people gathered at the Masi Karupannarayar temple, located 65 km away from Sathyamangalam, to participate in the annual Kuntam festival. Over 100 residents from Thengu Marahada village came to the temple in a lorry on Tuesday early morning. The driver of the lorry parked the vehicle in an elevated ground nearby.
After attending the festival, the residents decided to return to their village and started boarding the lorry around 8 a.m. It was said that the vehicle started moving due to a brake failure and dashed against a rock before turning over.
Two persons Rayappan (40) and Suresh (23) died on the spot. A team of Special Task Force personnel camping at Mangalapatti rushed to the spot and rescued the persons trapped under the lorry. Eleven persons who sustained injuries were rushed to the Sathyamangalam Government Hospital. One of the injured Ravi (25) died on the way to the hospital, sources said. Police have registered a case.
