Three killed as ambulance overturns

An aged woman and her daughter-in-law where charred to death when the ambulance they were travelling in overturned and caught fire near Modakurichi in Erode district early on Monday. The driver was also killed in the fire.

The victims were identified as Sellam (62) and Lakshmi (42) and Thangaraj (20). Sellam was accompanying her ailing husband. The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, hit a tree and the vehicle overturned.

Kathirvel (65), who was being shifted from a private hospital in Vellakovil to a speciality hospital in Erode, and his son Balasubramani (45) were rescued by the public before the vehicle went up in flames.

Fire personnel retrieved the charred bodies and sent them to the Government Headquarters Hospital for post-mortem.
