May 17, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:40 am IST - SIVAGANGA:

Three voters, including two women, suffered injuries when a portion of plastering in a sunshade at Kottur polling station in Karaikudi Assembly constituency peeled off and fell on them around 10.30 a.m. on Monday.

Police and official sources said that the voters – Senthilnathan (21), Pappa (68) and Kaliammal (40) – who visited the polling station at Devakottai Panchayat Union Primary School to cast their votes, were standing below the sunshade when the mishap occurred.

As it was raining, the voters took shelter below the sunshade, the sources said.

While Mr. Senthilnathan and Ms. Pappa suffered head injuries, Ms. Kaliammal suffered an injury on her shoulder. They were admitted to Government Hospital in Devakottai and their condition was stable, the sources said.

Collector and District Election Officer S. Malarvizhi said that the three injured were not part of voters standing in the queue to exercise their franchise. As it was raining, they were waiting under the sunshade, she said, adding polling continued in the booth.
