VIRUDHUNAGAR

Virudhunagar West police arrested three persons, including functionaries of Tamil Puligal, on the charges of making threats and extorting money from a hospital on Wednesday.

The accused – V. Pandiaraj (29) and G. Muniyaraj (29), both functionaries of Tamil Puligal, and R. Vasarajan (27) – were sent to judicial custody on Thursday.

The police said sometime back the trio, claiming to be social activists, threatened Suresh, who was managing the hospital on behalf of his brother Dr. Rajesh, that they would “publicly expose” the “unauthorised” discharge of effluent water from the kidney care centre.

Apprehending problems, Mr. Suresh paid them ₹3 lakh. On Wednesday, the trio again threatened him. Mr. Suresh asked them to come to the hospital and alerted the police. Virudhunagar West police arrested the trio and booked them for extortion, trespass, abuse, cheating and criminal intimidation.
