Thenthamaraikulam police have registered case against seven persons who allegedly stopped the recently appointed Executive Officer of Ayya Vaikundar head temple at Swamithoppe in the district and threatened her.

The temple at Swamithoppe that attracts thousands of devotees from various parts of the country was recently declared a ‘common temple’ by a court here. Subsequently, Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments department appointed Ponni as its Executive Officer.

When thousands of devotees gathered at the temple on March 4 to celebrate the birth anniversary of Ayya Vaikundar, Ms. Ponni went to the temple. As she was reportedly stopped and verbally abused by a few, Ms. Ponni filed a complaint with Thenthamaraikulam police.

Based on her complaint, the police registered a case against Paiyan Kamaraj, Paiyan Raja, Agastheesan, Bala Janathipathi, Swami, Dharma Rajini and Paiyan under Sections 506 (I) (criminal intimidation) and 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) of the Indian Penal Code on Thursday.
