Pressing for various demands including 10 per cent reservation for Muslims in Central and State government departments, representatives of Tamil Nadu Thowheed Jamath on Tuesday staged a jail bharo across the State.
Thousands of volunteers staged a jail bharo in Chennai, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Virudhunagar, Madurai, Ramanathapuram and other districts, police said.
Raising slogans demanding 10 per cent reservation for Muslims, the members urged the implementations of the Sachar Committee, Justice Ranganath Mishra Committee.
In Chennai, the about 6,000 members led by Tamil Nadu Thowheed Jamath president P. Jainullabudeen staged a demonstration near Rajaratnam Stadium in Egmore before they were arrested, police said.
Volunteers of TNTJ from Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Virudhunagar, Tuticorin, Madurai, Ramanathapuram, Theni staged a demonstration under the leadership of the State Secretary Yusuf Ali and other office bearers in various places, they added.
