Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi leader Thol. Thirumavalavan was gheraoed, allegedly by AIADMK cadre, during his visit to Thirumanthurai village in the district on Wednesday morning. His car was pelted with stones.

Mr. Thirumavalavan had come to visit his sister when the protesters intercepted his vehicle and questioned the reason for his visit at a time when the second phase of polling in the local body elections was under way.

Police sources said Mr. Thirumavalavan left the village after the incident. A complaint has been preferred with the Mangalamedu police on behalf of Mr. Thirumavalavan.

Speaking to reporters at Perambalur later, Mr. Thirumavalavan demanded action against those involved in the incident. He threatened to launch an agitation if no action was taken.
