When involving commitment for a pious cause, nothing can be a back-breaking exercise. Rather, the tough effort brings about joy and pleasure.

This was quite evident at the Ponnusamy Marriage Hall here where a group of over 500 women from all walks of life, sat together to prepare garlands using marigolds for Lord Srinivasa Perumal in Tirumala. The event was organised by the Sri Bakthi Sarar Baktha Saba in the city.

The occasion marks their annual devotion-based service to the presiding deity for the Srivari Brahmothsavam scheduled to begin at Tirumala on September 26.

Four tonnes of flowers are used for the purpose. The flowers were procured directly from the farms in Sathyamangalam, Hosur, Bangalore, and Rayakottai with the donations made by the members of the Saba. Marigolds were selected as suggested by Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam, as they will remain fresh for about a week, says A. Srinivasan, organiser of the Saba, and the event.

The event commenced with special puja by Sudarsana Battacharyar, archakar of Fort Sri Perumal Temple in the city. The members of the Salem Namathuvar Ashram rendered bhajan during the course of the event. The garlands, packed by specialists in the field, will be taken to Tirumala in a truck late this evening.

“We have got special permission from the TTD for transporting the flower loads in the truck, as there is a ban on entry of heavy vehicles on Tirumala temple road,” says Mr. Srinivasan.

The presiding deity and the entire Temple will be decorated with these garlands as soon as the lorry reaches Tirumala on Thursday morning.

The Saba will organise a similar exercise of preparing garlands for the final day of the Srivari Brahmothsavam that falls on October 4, at the Sona Auditorium at the Thiagaraja Polytechnic College, on October 1.
