The carrot and stick treatment

‘Police brutality WILL NOT BE TOLERATED at any cost’

Two recent incidents in the city have given out a clear message that the police will not let down the innocent and those who are not at fault.

A few days ago, a police inspector and a team of policemen were checking vehicles on Race Course Road late in the night. A businessman in a luxury car, when intercepted, picked up a quarrel with them and threatened that he would talk to senior police officers and even called up one of them.

The senior officer inquired about the incident, came to know that the businessman was at fault and hence, asked the caller to apologise to the police officer. He later verified if the businessman had done so.

In another incident, an elderly and mentally challenged woman was beaten up by a policeman near the Ukkadam Bus Stand recently.

She was treated at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for the injuries. When the issue was taken to the notice of the local police, they did not take it seriously. However, City Police Commissioner A.K. Viswanathan who came to know about the incident conducted an inquiry and placed the Special Sub Inspector of police attached to the Ukkadam Police station under suspension. The issue was also discussed at a review meeting organised at the office of the City Police Commissioner.

The Police Commissioner said that brutal treatment would not be tolerated, even if a police officer was at fault. "We will support the officer only if they are right," he added.
