SASTRA V-C distributes pongal gift among 600 people

 The Women’s Welfare Association of Tamilavel Umamaheswaranar Karanthai Arts College here organised a pongal celebration on the college campus on Tuesday in which the undergraduate and postgraduate class girl students prepared delicious pongal in the traditional manner.

Principal Dr. R. Rajamani presided over the celebrations in the presence of Coordinator of the college G.Shanmugam.

The Principal pointed out the significance of Pongal as the harvest festival and how it was intertwined with the culture of the Tamil race. A cultural programme was conducted by students on the occasion.

At SASTRA University, Vice-Chancellor R. Sethuraman distributed pongal gift of 5 kg of rice, 1 kg of jaggery, 500 gm of dal and cotton saris to 600 villagers of Thirumalaisamudram, 380 people each in Vallam Pudhur, and Monnyampatti besides 295 people of Kuruvadipatti village, all in Thanjavur district.

Prof. Sethuraman said SASTRA had been offering Pongal gifts to the people of the villages in the vicinity of SASTA University ahead of the festivities for the last 15 years.

PUDUKOTTAI: Students of Mother Teresa College of Education celebrated the ‘Pongal’ festival with an eye on pollution and smoke-free environment.

Students honoured the farmers and prepared ‘Pongal’. S. Ganesh, District Collector, was accorded a conventional reception and brought to the venue by a bullock cart.

Udhayakumar, correspondent of the college, spoke on the importance of honouring the farmers who formed the backbone of India’s economy.
