Textiles is among the industries identified in the National Manufacturing Policy as a key labour-intensive sector, according to Ajay Shankar, Member Secretary of the National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council (NMCC).
Mr. Shankar interacted with textile industry representatives of Tirupur and Coimbatore on Monday. He told The Hindu that the objective of the interaction was to feel the pulse of the industry.
Leather and food processing were the other key sectors identified in the policy. Information Technology and electronics hardware were identified as strategic sectors.
The Union government recently adopted the National Manufacturing Policy that envisaged 12 per cent to 14 per cent growth of the manufacturing sector annually for 10 years. It also aimed at creating 100 million manufacturing jobs in 10 years.
The council advised the government on measures needed to make India successful in the manufacturing sector.
The NMCC was looking at a partnership process with State Governments, Planning Commission, industries, and the Departments concerned to evolve a road map for the growth of the manufacturing sector.
The road map would be sector-specific and would be an on-going process that would foster evolution of these sectors, he said.
