Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Friday said the outcome of the by-election to the Tiruchi (West) Assembly constituency and local body polls bore testimony to the good governance offered by the AIADMK government in a short span.
“I firmly believed that the verdict would be the people's assessment of the AIADMK government and I stand vindicated,” she said in a statement.
She said the victory of the AIADMK in the Tiruchi (West) Assembly elections had proved the people had reposed faith in the government, because the AIADMK was able to double its victory margin although it went alone in the elections.
In the 2011 general election, the constituency polled 74.93 per cent votes and the AIADMK party secured over 77,000 votes, winning the seat by a margin of 7,179 voters. But now it has polled only 61.15 per cent votes and the AIADMK could win it with a margin of 14,684 votes.
Pointing out that the party had won all the 10 Municipal Corporation, besides capturing over 88 municipalities, 284 town panchayats so far, she said the partymen had done well in town panchayats and wards where elections were not contested on party lines.
“Local bodies are the nurseries of democracy. I have been saying that strong local bodies are necessary for strengthening the democracy and for proper implementation of government's schemes,” she said and thanked the voters for electing the AIADMK candidates.
“Let us create a prosperous Tamil Nadu through good governance and administration. Let us be a model state to others. I take this pledge to send the message to you,” she said.
